What a great start to 2014 Summer Camp at Princeton Junior School! Our campus is surrounded by beautiful nature from our frog ponds to vegetable gardens to our forest labryinth. And so this week, we celebrate our gardens! Our campers will create new kinds of gardens while harvesting and tasting from what we already have.
Our Art and Nature campers worked busily together on an herb garden. Using their senses, campers smelled and felt each herb. Their favorite scent? Basil. Their least favorite? Hot and Spicy Oregano. This is great feedback as we plan smoothies for later in the week! Campers also planted dill, spearmint and curly parsley. They scooped soil, dug holes and studied and talked about the importance of roots. The children watered the plants and will continue to take care of them throughout the summer.
Today we made play dough together from scratch. The children were helpful in the kitchen. Tomorrow we will turn it into "herb" play dough by scenting it with mint and basil from our gardens.
Our Curiosity Campers got right to work harvesting in the garden this week. They checked on our vegetable garden and found some basil ready to be picked. They made delicious homemade pizza with fresh basil.
Our Curiosity Campers have begun the business of working on our pollinator garden. This naturescape is designed to attract honeybees and butterflies which will benefit our local ecosystem. On Monday they did an experiment to see which colored plants attract bees. We planted "trick flowers" in the garden and recorded which plants attracted the most insects. The results? blue and yellow were the most popular colors. On Wednesday, Mrs. Z. will work with us to plant our pollinator garden.
Today, local beekeeper, Michael Luciano joined us for a presentation on honeybees. He taught the children about how bees live, how to care for bees and some helpful tips on starting a garden for honeybees. The children got an up close look at all his equipment and some children even tried on the beekeeper mask! They smelled honey and tasted a few samples. We hope you enjoyed the honey at home today with your family!
Tomorrow is Water Play Wednesday. See you tomorrow ready to splash!
