Princeton Junior school is very happy to be able to provide an apprenticeship program for future educators. The apprentices get a 2 week slot with us at camp where they are able to learn, get experience and grow in their chosen line of study. During this period, they are asked to produce one lesson as part of their experience. Below is a message from last weeks presenter, Cammy Johnson.
"When I first learned of the Apprenticeship program at Princeton Junior School I was excited to find a program that would provide a chance to learn about early childhood education while working first hand with the campers. When I arrived I was greeted warmly by all of the staff and campers, and shortly after I began assisting the teachers and introducing myself to the kids. Although at times it was a lot of work during my first week, working specifically with the 4-7 year old class, I learned so many important teaching skills, as well as having so much fun getting to know each camper. During the week I helped with many creative and engaging activities such as painting a color wheel, creating an obstacle course, and building sailboats to race. On the Friday of my first week, I was asked to create my own fun activity for the campers, so I decided to plan a scavenger hunt. After planning the locations for my scavenger hunt, I created short rhymes as clues that would lead the campers to the next location. On Friday morning I led the scavenger hunt with the 2-3 year old group and gave them helpful hints to where each clue could be found, (although they figured out many on their own). After the scavenger hunt with the younger group, I helped the energetic 4-7 year olds use teamwork to interpret all of the clues. Overall, this apprenticeship has been an amazing experience that has given me an opportunity to learn so much more about teaching and learning and I am very excited for another week of working with the campers!"
