During "Reimagine Colors" week, campers worked together to create a fine arts gallery in the Princeton Junior School Commons. This engaged them in several artistic mediums including watercolor, clay, oil pastel and acrylic paint.
Collaboratively, our entire camp worked on a large scale canvas painting of the American flag. Princeton Junior School Artist in Residence, Perry Milou, worked alongside the children to develop a pop-art inspired flag. In addition to painting, the children added several layers to the piece including beading and collage. Their final work will become a permanent installation in our PJS Commons.
Our 2-3 year old campers explored printmaking. They found various circular shaped items and dipped them in paint to create circle prints across pages. They also created water color paintings and experimented by adding salt to the paint. It was interesting to watch our young campers make an art to science connection!
Our 4 year old campers made 3 dimensional collages. They began the morning by finding a large display of tissue paper hanging from the ceiling. At first they played with the tissue paper, throwing it in the air and making up games with it. As the paper began to tear, the children used it to make collages.
Our Curiosity Campers took their sketch pads outside and created sunflower sketches from our garden. It was interesting to see how their work varied based on their perspectives. From these original sketches, the children explored different mediums including oil pastels, crayons and watercolors. They also made made 2 dimensional drawings and they brought them to life through 3 dimensional clay sculptures.
Our Fine Arts Gallery was a wonderful success! Thank you to all the parents who shared in our morning showcase of the children's work. It was exciting to share in their processes as artists and celebrate their final pieces in the gallery.
