Architecture week is upon us and from the start I was amazed at how engaging this form of play is for our campers. Block play develops fine motor skills, spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination. In addition it is a great way to express children's creativity and imagination.
Our Art campers got right to work building in the art room with this morning with Mr. Perry. They began collaborating on a group cityscape project by creating individual buildings out of recycled materials. Using tape and glue, the children affixed objects together. They built tall towers, made designs with popsicle sticks and decorated their towers with beads, stars and pipe cleaners. At the end of the week, we will join all the buildings together to make a large skyline. We also enjoyed this beautiful day in the sun and many campers played with our outdoor wooden blocks.
Our Innovation campers immersed themselves in architectural drawings today. They began by creating floor plans of their bedrooms. After this step, they continued with elevation drawings of a wall in their bedroom and then an elevation of the outside of their house. With Black Rocket instructors, campers were given an introduction to developing 2-dimensional games in preparation for creating their own Lego games. They also sampled several 2-D games to learn new vocabulary and background information on this game format.
As we continue this week of architecture, it will be fun to bring some designs to life and watch others grow and change as we build together. I can't wait to see the final results at our Friday morning showcase!
