We were delighted to kick off nature week with such a beautiful summer day! It was a perfect backdrop for us to play and explore the world around us.
In Art camp, we began the morning with Mr. Perry who brought in things from nature for us to collage and paint. The children couldn't get enough of the seashells to add to their projects! We painted and added backgrounds, feathers and pipe cleaners to our work. The most popular station in the art room? The washing table where children can wash their hands in the soapy water after painting. It's hard to get them out of there as they enjoy the sensory experience! We went on a nature walk later in the morning where we used paint swatches to find all the colors in nature. The children ran everywhere to find items that matched their colors. Look for our collage at our Friday showcase. We also celebrated two birthdays on Monday. Happy 3rd Birthday Ryka and Dylan! Needless to say, the cupcakes were the highlight of the day. : )
Our Innovation campers, started off their day by heading into the PJS forest to study trees and conduct a "roots" experiment." They took two samples of each of the different trees they found - sycamore, holly, maple and more. In the classroom, they placed one sample in diaper solution and the other in water. They will wait to see which trees grow roots first. Stay tuned to see what will happen! In the afternoon, campers started a paper airplane challenge, trying out different designs and folding techniques. This will continue over the next few days as campers test and revise their work. I entered the classroom mid-afternoon to find tables covered in cups, string, straws and garbage bags. Campers were busy preparing for an egg drop experiment using recycled materials. It was a challenge as they figured out how to best secure their egg so it would not break. They were collaborating on this project - learning from each other and talking about their strategies. Ask your child how their egg dropped and most importantly what they would do differently in their next design. Cracked or not, it looked like fun to drop eggs from the top of the playground : )
