Today began science week for our Art and Innovation camps. It was fun to walk around the building and see all the different ways to interpret science. From mixing bubbles and paint to making oobleck to designing and building robots, science could be found everywhere! We decided to call it Messy Science Monday as we worked with the children to measure, mix and mold ingredients together. The result? Messy, happy, curious children!
In our Art camp, campers began the morning with Mr. Perry experimenting with soap and paint. Using straws, campers created bunches and bunches of bubbles. They tried different techniques to transfer their colorful bubbles from straw to paper without popping them. There was lots of laughter as Mr. Perry made bubbles float down to the paper from really high in the air. Our creative work with bubbles resulted in beautiful prints and artistic designs.
We began a sensory experience by asking the children what they thought 'science' was and their answers were impressive! They ranged from light to planets to magnifying glasses - all great elements of scientific work! We built off of their planets idea and began talking about the moon. We then made "moon sand" in our sensory table. For those of you interested in making it at home, the simple recipe is 8 cups of flour to 1 cup of baby oil. It was a sensory delight for our little ones as they learned that it could be sculpted and molded into different forms. Look for a sample and the recipe to be sent home tomorrow.
Our Innovation campers had quite the busy day making messy science concoctions. Using a bunch of household materials they mixed oobleck, play dough and bouncy balls. They also began an egg experiment by soaking them in vinegar. The eggs need to soak for 15 hours so we will see what they look like tomorrow morning. In the afternoon, we began working with the computer program Pivot which allowed them to design their own people and make them move. After creating several panels, campers had their own digital flip book of their character. They also began exploring the robot kit; building models and experimenting with basic programming. I can't wait to see what these robots will be able to do by the end of the week!
Here are some photos from a great first day with our budding scientists. Enjoy!
