Our campers have been cooking up chemistry these past few days at Princeton Junior School. We created lots of reactions as we hypothesized and experimented with simple items that can be found in the kitchen.
In Art camp, we began with two ingredients: baking soda and vinegar. What fun we had! In a series of experiments we added soap, which produced lots of bubbles, food coloring, which sent blue foam floating everywhere and a balloon which blew up as the ingredients interacted. The children loved pouring different amounts of each ingredient to see what would happen and there were many amazed faces as the reactions occurred. I tried to capture their surprise in the pictures below. We have also been busy working on a two day freezing and melting experiment. We placed small items in pans and filled them with water. The first thing the children noticed was that some objects floated. Good observation scientists! (Floating experiments to come later in the week! ) We then placed everything in the freezer and when we brought it out the next morning for water play, the campers noticed that our pans were now "frozen, cold and hard." Outside in the heat, we watched them melt and break into chunks until all our items were returned back to their original form. It is a true delight to enjoy the magic of science with our youngest campers.
In Innovation camp, campers have created many experiments using all kinds of household ingredients. On Tuesday, they were busy cooking up science in the kitchen. They looked at the science that goes into making ice cream and popsicles. From how ingredients interact to the properties of liquids and solids, there was lots of science to discover in food. It turned out to be a great treat after being outside on one of the hottest days of summer so far! They also conducted a density experiment and Mr. B. taught them about the role of density in oil spills. And what ever happened to those eggs the children left in vinegar? They became bouncy balls! Although not all of them worked (I think a follow up experiment is in order) many did and there was much to discuss about how and why. Our Black Rocket afternoons continue to be busy as we work to design our robots. The hands on experiences with the robot kits are a great time to build creatively. You will see more creative building in our slideshow pictures. I am amazed at what these campers can do wiOur robots are coming to life as we name them and give them identifies. We can't wait for you to meet them on Friday at 3pm! We hope you will join us for our robot presentations.
We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning for our Friday Showcase!
