Our Andy Goldsworthy inspired work was a great way to celebrate art and nature last week. We used photography books of Andy Goldsworthy's work as well as a short video to learn more about this artist. Mr. A. provided bamboo from our campus as our first material for creating sculptures. It was surprising to see how the bamboo sticks could bend and stack. Campers used string to design three dimensional figures using this natural material. It was exciting to see the different ways campers interacted with the bamboo.
Our youngest campers studied pictures of Goldsworthy's work with rocks. They created rock sculptures by balancing rocks on top of one another. They could stack many rocks quite high. Campers took a trip to the PJS forest to see the labryinth. After seeing this work, they worked together to create large rock designs. Campers also gathered collections of natural materials and put it in bottles. The results were beautiful layers of flowers, sticks, leaves, acorns and more.
A final project by our Curiosity Campers was a large outdoor sculpture. They sketched possibilities for the work as well as materials. In the end, the project used one element of each child's sketch. Children gathered stumps, branches, rocks and more for this project. They stacked and balanced different pieces upon one another which created bridges, tunnels and small holes within the work. The children even used Andy Goldsworthy's technique of using thorns to hold leaves in place. It was a great collaborative effort from the children.
Thank you to all the families who joined us for our first Friday Showcase! We hope you enjoyed sharing in your child's work from the week. Art is in nature all around us!
